People and Emotions
For my personal study I have chosen to study people and emotions photography. More specifically I will be focusing on portraits of people and will be taking my own photographs in this style. This means I will be taking photographs of different people with no makeup or special effects. This is an exciting subject as it has a lot of potential for some fantastic photographs and is a chance for me to show my creativity in the subject. I will have many opportunities to take photographs with the schools great photography facilities and my classmates willing to be my models. This is a lively and diverse concept in the photography course that has endless amounts of opportunities to succeed in. This side of photography focuses on the emotions of people in different scenarios and how the emotion of a certain person can complete a photograph. My photographs will have different style in evry one that I take.
This is due to the emotion of the model in the photograph. For example if the model is smiling I will edit the photograph to be bright and happy yet if the model is sad I will make it look dark and gloomy using photoshop software. I chose this specific subject as it is something that interests me greatly and is an exciting platform to build off for me to try and aim to achieve a high mark in this area of photography. I also much prefer this personal and emotional aspect of photography to the other popular aspect of capturing buildings and nature. I will be taking my own photographs relating to the people and emotions concept. These photographs will be vastly of my classmates and include a numerous amount of emotions. The message I want to convey is that everyone feels different emotions in different situations and this is completely normal and natural.
I have also researched many different photographers that specialise in the people and emotions section of photography and whose work has influenced me to try and recreate their photography.
Lee Jeffries
Lee Jeffries is an English photographer that heavily focuses on the emotional side of human photography. He has taken many emotional photography images of models portraying many different types of emotions. All of these emotions look very believable and raw which is credit to the photographer himself and also the amazing models. These photographs are of many different people that are using different facial expressions. He also uses many different ethnic minorities in his pictures. Yet the biggest and most obvious personal stamp that Lee Jeffries puts on his work is the fact that he makes every single photograph into black and white. This is because every photograph that I could find that Lee Jeffries took was turned into black and white by using what i presume to be photoshop.
In my opinion, Lee Jeffries is possibly my favourite photographer that I have studied so far in this photography course. This is due to his photographs fascinating me and every single one being a very good and powerful photograph of a different model with a different emotion. After analysing and studying Lee Jeffries work I am very excited to get going on taking my own photographs and using Jeffries work as my inspiration to succeed in this part of the course.
Although my photographs will clearly not be on the same level as this magnificent photographers, I would like a few of my photographs to replicate his photographs. This would be very satisfying and would be something I would be very proud of.

Above is possibly my favourite photograph that Lee Jeffries has taken. This is due to the fantastic quality of the camera that shows every small detail. This is clearly due to the very high tech and expensive photography that Jeffries has bought for himself. It also captures the child's sad and needing eyes perfectly. This photograph makes us sympathise with the model in the photograph is she looks innocent and she doesn't deserve the hardship that it is looking like she is getting in the photograph.
My own work
After being inspired by work from other fantastic photographers, I attempted to replicate some photographs of my own. I took photographs on my classmates pulling different facial expressions to represent different emotions. I took these photographs in front of a school projector that one of my teachers kindly let me use. I put a collage of a man displaying

I took photographs on my classmates pulling different facial expressions to represent different emotions. I took these photographs in front of a school projector that one of my teachers kindly let me use. I put a collage of a man displaying
different emotions in the background of my classmate who was posing as my model. This worked very well as my model imitated the many different emotions seen on the projector seen behind him. These photographs came out very well and is something that I am very proud of. My models that I used did a fantastic job of recreating the emotions and were a big part of my images coming out very well in my opinion.
These photographs came out very well and are some of my favourite photographs that I have ever taken in this photography course over the last two years. This is because I set a goal to take as many photographs as possible of as many different emotions as possible. Due to the excellent work of the model that I have already mentioned and the many different shots that the schools excellent facilities I was able to capture some fantastic photographs. Next time I attempt to take some of these people and emotions types of photographs there is a few things that I would do differently. For example, in the photographs you can see above, I have used projections in the background of the models. I used these projections to add a new dimension to the photographs. All though I stand by this decision and think that the photographs came out very well and part of the reason was the carefully chosen projections in the background, I would remove the projections if I had the chance to recreate the photographs. This is because I would be very curious to see what these photographs would of came out like if they had a black black or white background. This is because I think the emotions on the models faces would be the main and only real subject of the photograph. I would also remove these projections to make the emotions of the model the only subject of the photograph. This is because it would be the only thing that the audience could focus on making the various types of emotions of the models stand out even more than they already do.
Compared to the fantastic work of the photographer that I have researched and am a big fan of, Lee Jeffries, I think my work replicates his quiet well. Although that my photographs are not as good as his due to me obviously not being as talented as he is and not having the same top quality camera equipment as him, yet our photographs do draw some similarities. This is due to both sets of images portraying different types of emotions and being shot very in s very similar and specific way.
Overall i have really enjoyed this part of the photography course. I enjoyed exploring the different parts of photography and the different photographers I had the opportunity to research some of the most talented photographers that I have came across over this photography course. I am also very happy that this course gave me the chance to discover the amazing work of Lee Jeffries. I had a lot of fun trying to recreate his images and I am very happy and proud of. I may even carry on pursuing this interest outside of school hours and move onto bigger and hopefully better photography projects in the future.

Costume and masks
research
This Costume and Design project is a very interesting and a exciting project. This project combines creativity and costumes to create pictures that can be tampered with. We need to find photogenic costumes and masks that can reflect our photographic side. This will then be changed accordingly with the photoshop software. My initial thoughts of this topic was that it is very interesting .
Richard Burbridge
Richard Burbridge is one of my favourite photographers that I have ever studied. I think this because his photographs are so creative combined with how the photographs are taken. I think Burbridge also uses fantastic models that really capture the emotion of the picture which is a big part of taking a good photograph. Burbridge's photos are all very similar in the style and the lighting that they are taken in. The vast majority of his photographs are taken in a harsh bright lighting . This has a big effect on the photograph and how it looks as some of the features and colours are made more or less visible. The majority of these photographs below are taken against a blank background. This is very useful and something that I think is a very good idea. This is because it means that the model is not just the main focus of the photograph but he/she is the ONLY focus of the photograph.
hanny honeymoon
Hanny Honeyman is a female costume and fashion photographer who is from Hannover Germany.. She specilises in taking photographs of women with lots of makeup on and most importantly some kind of heavy costume, most of the time something with an old fashioned, medieval type of atmosphere. Hanny Honeymoon has her own website including her portfolio and her photography blog which explains how she takes her photographs and her motivation for the photography that she takes part in. Overall Honeymoon is a vey good and professional fantsay photographer and is someone that I am looking to replicate with my own photography in this project.
my own unedited work
I took these images using masks that i previously bought off the internet. As you can see the masks are very plain yet this means there is opportunity for creativity such as painting or drawing on the masks to push the atmosphere of the future photographs in a different direction. Leaving the masks plain as they are gave the pictures an Eerie and creepy effect. It gives the impression that the models of the photographs don't care about their potentially dangerous and harmful surroundings . Overall these photographs worked very well.
PHOTOSHOP CS5 edited work
This work is the same photographs as the ones above but they have been edited on photoshop. Some of the edits on the photographs are more complex than others. The type of edit that I chose depends on the photo itself and the quality of the original images.
I really enjoyed working with these masks. I think because they are so pale and plain it gives a very creepy and mysterious atmosphere to the pictures. The way that the models of the photographs are in normal clothing and are clearly in a school also gives these photographs an uncertain and nasty. I enjoyed taking these photographs as i found it quite effortless to get a good picture due to the models' faces being covered up.
black and white PHOTOGRAPHY
The black and white is always a useful and constant tool on photoshop. It always gives the image a completely different vibe and adds a whole new outlook from the audience. The absence of the colours always makes the picture darker, resulting in the image being more gloomy and in many cases gives the image that was once normal a scary and horror-filled atmosphere. The black and white filter is also very simple and easy to use for something so effective and for a tool that changes the photograph completely.
To turn a picture black and white using the photoshop software on the apple mac computers. You firstly select the image and open it with photoshop. Once the photo is open, click 'image' at the top of the screen Then select 'adjustments' and then click 'Black and White'. You can even change the contrast of certain colours on the black and white. So for example if you wanted to make the colour blue from the original photo look darker or lighter you could do hat very easily and do the same on any different colours.
As you can clearly see from the two images above, they are both very similar as they have both got a black and white effect on them. Yet there is a clear difference. The image on the right is slightly lighter and less focused than the darker image on the right. This is due to me changing the contrast of the red colour of the original photograph. This means that any red color on the original image is intensified and shown more brightly and clearly after the red contrast had been tampered with. This is a very simple yet effective way to slightly change an image to suit your needs and can also work for any colour.
ExperimentING WITH LAYER MASK FACILITY IN PSCS5
The next images that I will present are images that I have photoshopped in various different ways. There will not be one particular style that I will try and replicate in this specific feature of the project. I will be playing around with photoshops multiple features and effects. I personally like the experimental side of photography as there is an idea that there is an endless amount of photographs you can create.
How my work is similar to the photographers i have researched
The photograph on the left is a image that I took myself of one of my classmates, yet the photograph on the right is an image by the fantasy and costume photographer Hanny Honeymoon. Although Honeymoon's image is unfortunately heavily pixilated, It is clear to see that in both photographs the subject is staring directly at the camera. They also both have a very blank expression on their face due to the mask and the faceprint that are used in both photographs. I realised the similarities in these photographs as I was scanning through my work and thought it was very interesting. This is because researching the images from Honeymoon before I took any pictures for this project clearly had an effect on me and made me imitate her own very interesting work.
Rankin Destroy Project
My Initial thoughts
I wondered how this fitted in with the main topic, costume, identity and disguise. But after thinking about it I realised that these images may well represent how these celebrities feel. This could be their identity or their disguise. My first task was to look at the different types of images which they created.
Rankins destroy project was clearly very different and in my opinion very interesting. It involved taking photographs of people and editing them in different interesting and creative ways as you can see in the examples below. The photographs are edited using a computer and can also sometimes be edited by hand on a photograph after picture. In the photographs i took trying to replicate Rankin, I used the computer software to edit my photographs as well as using my own tools such as painting and crayons.
deconstructing an image
my initial ideas TO INCORPORATE THE RANKIN THEME OF DESTROY INTO MY OWN PERSONAL STUDY - PEOPLE AND EMoTIONS
John Rankin Waddell
John Rankin Waddell is a famous English Portrait and a very well known fashion photographer. He is most commonly known for his Destroy project that he done very successfully. This project included taking pictures of famous celebrities and 'Destroying' the images with a heavy amount of photoshop. These photographs proved very popular for a number of reasons but mostly for the fantatsic photoshop work and the edge that these images had.
my work
my ideas- BUILDING UPON THE THEME OF PHYSICALLY DRAWING INTO THE PHOTOGRAPHS.
I really enjoyed trying to recreate ranking work. This is because it was work off of photoshop for a change which was a refreshing difference. I enjoyed it as I had a chance to be different from everybody else's work and i had the chance to do whatever i wanted with my work. Overall this was a challenging yet enjoyable task that i hope to do more of in the future.
using the same image repeatedly
Using the same photograph for different purposes is always a very creative thing to do and is never a bad idea. as you can see from a brief example from above, the same picture can be portrayed in many different ways using the Photoshop software. For example the atmosphere of the photograph can be altered completely. For example if a black and white effect was added to the photo it gives it a much darker and gloomy vibe fit for a horror project. This is very effective in the Rankin destroy project images as the picture has endless potential and can be used in many different ways.
ExperimentING WITH LEVELS AND COLOUR.
The pictures above are possibly my favourite images that I have created in my time studying the Rankin destroy project. This is because they are very simple to create using the photoshop software on the Apple Macs. They fit the idea of the rankin project perfectly as they change the image's identity while still keeping it similar to the original image. I created these images by using the 'dry brush' option after I selected 'Filter' on the top tool bar and then selected 'Artistic'. I then had many options to select to alter the original image. These images could be altered even further by experimenting with effects such as lowering the brightness. This will make the picture look much more horror based and gloomy. which can also fit in with the rankin project.
My final project
My final project is heavily influenced by the photograph below. This is one of the most famous and well recognised pictures from the rankin destroy project. I have focused my images on this photograph and have tried to replicate the style this photograph is captured in and tried to replicate the style that the photograph was edited in. I chose this photo as it is my favourite out of all of the popular rankin destroy images. This is because of the powerful facial expression that the model is pulling in the photograph and the quirky slogan at the bottom of the picture.
The images below are the ones that I have tried to replicate in the style of the rankin photograph above. I added some red tint to the photograph to give it a similar atmosphere to the image that i was trying to recreate. I think this went very well and I am very happy and proud of the final outcome. I think looking back at the images I would have not used the red tint as I think the image without the red tint as I think it would look much more like the original image that I have based my photoshopped and edited images on.

painting people and faces with light
Disguising people and faces with light is our new project that we have been assigned. This Assignment can include many different styles including projections, silhouettes, and shadow photography. I will be showcasing these on my website using my unedited images that I have took and I can also use the photoshop software to edit the images and to put my own spin on them so I can upload them to my website. Above are some examples of this.

These photographs are unedited and have not been changed using photoshop. I made the decision not to photoshop these photographs in particular as i came to the realisation that after experimenting with these photographs using the photoshop software, I decided that the photographs was better without any special effect. I am very happy with these photographs as I thi

Identity/an autobiographical study
Object photography is something that represents personality and memories in someones life. It can be something that holds a moment that a person will never forget such as a ticket to a football match or concert, or something that has been vital to them all their lives such as a phone. These items may be something that reminds a person of the days of when they was younger and had much less to worry about than they do in the present. I think my project will go down the route nostalgia and memories I have from a young age.
My own work
The images below are things that I have brought into my photography lessons as they all mean a lot to me for different reasons that I will explain shortly. All of these objects below mean a lot to me. There are objects that I use in my everyday life and objects that will live on with me due to the memories they hold.
Headphones - Personally, this is an essential object to everyday life for me. I use these headphones everyday when I am going through everyday tasks such as walking to school and doing my homework. Overall this object is very important to me and is something that I would struggle without.
Football ticket - The ticket below is from the FA Cup final of 2009 between Everton and Chelsea. This means a lot to me as it holds many memories. Although we got beat 2-1 in the game, the moment we scored was one of the best i've had in my whole life. This is a memory that I will always treasure as one of my happiness.
Phone - My phone is possibly the most important thing in my life. It holds everything that I need and most of the time I speak to my friends and even sometimes do homework on. I know this is the object I would struggle the most without.
Football Trophy - This holds a lot of nostalgia to me. It is one of the first football trophies that I won meaning it is another object that holds a lot of good memories.
ID - My ID is probably the least important thing out of all my objects and and holds the least meaning. Yet despite this it does represent all the times I have legally went out with my friends and made some good and bad memories.
Season Ticket - This is easily the most valuable thing I have out of my personal objects. This is due to it being what lets me watch Everton at my favourite place Goodison Park. Everton have always meant a lot to me therefore this particular item is hugely important.

Mindmap
Below is a mind map of the objects I picked and the reasons I picked them. Hopefully this will make you understand in simple terms why these certain objects mean so much to me and the reasons why I cherish them or need them in everyday life. As you can see, I have labelled these objects accordingly why they mean so much to me and if i still use them to this day r if they are just a memory.
We made our collages on photography. By collage I mean we put images of our personal items together in a single file and put something that means something special to us in the background. I will explain how I done this:
The first thing I was told to do was open one of my objects on its own on the photoshop software on the computer, as you can see above.
The next thing I had to do is Cut the rest of the photograph out that I don't need. Using the 'Polygonal Lasso Tool', I cut around me headphones. I then selected 'select' and then 'inverse'. I then selected 'Edit' in the top toolbar, then i clicked cut. This made the image look like above, leaving me with just my object which in this case is my headphones.
To then get the blank canvas that we need to project our images on, I will need to select 'File' on the top tool bar and then 'new'. This will then create a new blank page where our cut images can be dragged onto.
As you can see above, once the image is dragged into the new file that we have just created. I repeated this process with all of my objects and then added a background of goodison park as this is means a lot to me.
The image above is close to my final product. I added the picture of Goodison into the background yet I wanted it to have more of a mystical effect. So to do this I added a sunrise photograph to the image and changed the opacity. This made it look more natural and give it a sort of spiritual vibe. This picture can be seen below.
Although I am happy with my final image, I can easily improve it. I can do this by putting an interesting image or symbol in the middle of my phone for example. I am going to put a picture or symbol of fire or the sun in the middle of my phone screen. This is because it will stand out and I can make it fit perfectly into my phone.
Although I think this image is of a high standard and I am happy with it, I think the fire could blend in to the phone much softer and make the overall image look a lot better. To make the fire blend into the phone in the background I will decrease the opacity. This will make the fire go a lot darker and less visible yet the fire itself will stay easily visible and bright.
people and emotions
The next main project that I will be exploring is the idea of people and emotions. This will include taking portraits of various different models with different emotions on their face like you can see on the models below. I like this topic in photography as it lets me bring out the human side and emotions of photography and it is a nice change from taking photographs of things such as buildings or light photography.
lee jeffries
Lee Jeffries is an English photographer that heavily focuses on the emotional side of human photography. He has taken many emotional photography images. These photographs are of many different people that are using different facial expressions. He also uses many different ethnic minorities in his pictures. Yet he biggest and most obvious personal stamp that Lee Jeffries puts on his personal stamp that Jeffries puts on his work is the fact that he makes every single photograph into black and white. This is clearly seen in the photographs below.
my own work
Black and white
In my opinion, the Black and White effect of photoshop is one of the easiest yet most useful effects on the photoshop software. This is due to the effect completely changing the colour of the image and giving it the photograph a completely different atmosphere and can possibly give the photograph a completely different outlook to its audience than first intended. I think that the black and white effect
These are photograph that I have edited using photoshop. As you can see,I have made these photographs black and white. I chose to edit these photographs in this particular way as it matches the emotions on the faces of the models in the photographs. I think the black and white features on these photographs really bring out the emotions from the models. This is due to none of these emotions being positive or happy so the black and white bring out the darkness and negative emotions that the models in the photographs are portraying.
